I will start this newsletter with a completely different topic. I was reading one of the many definitions of family business and this is what I found "...a family business is defined as a commercial organization where multiple family members are actively involved in the day by day business. These businesses are characterized by family influence, control, and a strong emotional connection to the company..."

Then I was looking at the picture above and out of 4 main actors, I can spot my mum, my nephew and my goddaughter (not to mention our newly team member Maayan). So 3 out of 4 relatives discussing a photo shooting, I believe we are a family business after all and yes since we are Italians we discuss most of the time moving our arms around!

HAMPTONS...

Summer is moving at a steep pace; weather is gorgeous as always and nature blesses us with endless sunny days...well few clouds from time to time relieve the heat and are welcome form the shoppers on Main Street.

Yes, it is still summer and yet the Fall-Winter collection is making is debut in the Hamptons Atelier. Wait! It is not my fault; everyone is already asking for booties and leather jackets...do not shoot the messenger!

I have spent all my summers here since I was a kid, Westhampton Beach has never been this busy and alive. The Village has improved the underground water system and new restaurants (and cozy Boutiques Hotels) just popped out making everyone super happy about this new season.

FIRENZE...

With many making their way to the coast for hours spent lazing under the Tuscan sun, there’s still plenty to explore in Florence, with the cultural calendar not stopping even as the Ferie (holidays) means many locals make an exodus. Our Artisan Atelier will be closed the entire month, and our Artisans will be back crafting for you all in the blink of an eye.

If you’re going to be in the Renaissance city this month, don’t miss out on the Opera del Duomo Museum’s recently launched virtual reality visit of Brunelleschi’s dome, guiding you through the construction of the cupola from the creator’s perspective. It’s a whole new way to learn about its fascinating history and the giant feat it was to bring it into creation. The largest masonry dome ever built, even the intricate hoisting machines were designed by Brunelleschi!

A lovely way to spend a summer’s evening is to attend a dazzling performance as part of the Site Dance Festival that’s running until September 27. Moving through many of Florence’s neighborhoods, spectacular villas, gardens and museums host contemporary dance, with favorite spots like Michelozzo Courtyard at Palazzo Medici Riccardi bound to prove a memorable way to spend a serata (evening).

It’s also time to return to Palazzo Pitti, as its fashion museum has just added forty looks in nine new rooms, taking visitors through the fashion of the 1900s. From the Charleston wear of the 1920s to garments in fine silks enriched with decorative motifs inspired by China, Japan and India, there’s even a triptych by Galileo Chini reminiscent of Puccini’s operas, featuring the gown worn by the artist’s wife at the premiere of Turandot at Teatro alla Scala in Milan on April 25, 1926.

August 15 is Ferragosto (Mid-August), and if you’ve ever been in the city over the days around the festa you’ll know it’s all about time spent with friends and family, switching off the laptop and turning the key in many businesses in order to honor the public holiday that stems from ancient Roman times as well as the Christian Feast of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. 

While there are no thoughts of turning on the oven in this heat, we’re all about fresh plates that don’t involve hours over a hot stove. Fave (broad beans) are a nutritional favorite that, when paired with a local pecorino cheese, guarantee an authentic and delicious snack or appetizer, particularly perfect for picnics! Keep in mind that you might hear locals use the Tuscan term baccelli instead of fave! Whether blanched or raw, the beans can be dressed with extra virgin olive oil, black pepper and/or a squeeze of lemon juice for extra freshness.
