A busy events calendar greets summer, with exciting new arrivals on the cultural scene. The longer evenings mean the return of outdoor dining, and the city’s green spaces transform into event venues, all gathered together on the Estate Fiorentina calendar (www.estatefiorentina.it) that shares the summer’s unmissable happenings!

There’s great excitement for art lovers with the announcement that the Innocenti Museum in piazza Santissima Annunziata now includes the Gallery of Frescoes, reopening after decades of closure. Spanning from the 13th to 18th centuries, the sinopias and detached frescoes are displayed chronologically and thematically, offering a close-up view of the techniques used by masters like Alessandro Allori. The Chapel of the Nuns can also be visited, with its secret little window that looks down onto the neighboring church, as well as the former rooms of the Prior that have been transformed into educational and exhibition spaces.

There’s something so inspiring about seeing the majestic movements of the top-class performers of the Florence Dance Festival. Taking place from June 23 to July 27, the 36th edition of the festival sees highlights like Carmen on the Santa Maria Novella stage, performed by the Spanish dance company Compañía Antonio Gades. I can’t wait!

Firenze Rocks is an annual highlight for music fans, with big names like Guns N’ Roses, Korn and Green Day taking to the Visarno Arena on June 12, 13 and 15. And then, of course, there’s Pitti Uomo from June 17-20, bringing the best in menswear to Fortezza da Basso, with children’s clothes from June 25-26 and textiles on July 1-3. It’s always a great time to see what’s what in the fashion world!

For some time soaking up nature, you won’t want to miss the Villa La Quietegardens that have opened to the public for the first time in their 300-year history. Created by Anna Maria Luisa de’ Medici, it’s a gem in the hills of Florence that has a rich history, detailed in guided tours.

If you want to catch some greenery in the city center, you can check out the Leopoldine Garden in Museo Novecento, an installation by the artist and environmental activist Haley Mellin who gives new life to the Renaissance cloister with a carefully cultivated garden that acts as a space for contemplation and dialogue.

Expect a spectacular firework display to celebrate Festa di San Giovanni on June 24, the patron saint of the city. Taking place on the same day is the final of the traditional Florentine soccer tournament, Calcio Storico Fiorentino. The four historic districts of the city (quartieri) compete for glory, with the Rossi, Azzurri, Verdi and Bianchi battling it out in the centuries-old sport.

With the start of summer, we seek out seasonal ingredients. Zucchini are a versatile vegetable that are the making of many dishes. A particularly pretty version, however, is fried zucchini blossoms which is not only simple but also impressive! Having cleaned the blossoms (remember, they’re very delicate!), prepare your batter with water, flour and salt, keeping it quite liquid and cold. 

Then, it’s just a case of deep-frying them and serving hot with a sprinkle of salt! For a level up, you can add mozzarella and anchovies for more substance and flavor...Buon appetito!
